This magnificent black leopard (panther) was rescued from abusive captivity since birth. As it knew nothing of being wild, it could not be released into the wild and so it was given generous space to live happily to the end of its days. We were fortunate to be able to see it so close-up. At this South African sanctuary animals are fed and well looked after. The leopard’s gaze was gentle, yet unnerving. I tried to capture the beauty of the eyes and healthy shine of this black leopard’s fur.
